Cast Iron Campfire Bread With Strawberry Jam

This bread is a wonderful, simple way to get in touch with nature. Imagine a serene laid back beach picnic with the waves singing as you unveil your rustic loaf from a blazing fire pit.

Make sure your coals are evenly distributed in your campfire ring. Place hot coals on top of the cast iron so both sides get heat. Keep a shovel, fire safety gloves and any fire safety equipment nearby

PREP TIME: 25 mins COOK TIME: 30 mins TOTAL TIME: 30 mins  Additional: 1 hour

Ingredients

Campfire Bread

  • 3 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast (2 packets)
  • 9 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Strawberry Jam

  • 3 cups of strawberries
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. In a bowl combine warm water, butter, and yeast; let sit until it becomes foamy.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Mix with your hands until dough comes together. Add flour as need if it sticks too much.
  3. Once the dough comes together, let rise in the cast iron about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Uncover and turn the risen dough out of the bowl, shape carefully into a ball.
  5. Carefully transfer the dough inside the pot. Replace the lid and bake for 40 to 45 minutes over the hot coals.
  6. While the bread is baking, chop your strawberries into small pieces.
  7. Throw them in a small cast iron skillet with your the sugar.
  8. Mix with a wooden spoon for five minutes until the sugar starts to bubble and the strawberries break down into a thick compote.
  9. Take off the hot coals and let cool. Distribute into a glass jar and save for later.
